      What is UK auto enrolment?

Under the Pensions Act 2008, if you run a company that employs at least one staff member, you have a legal duty to enrol eligible staff into a workplace pension scheme automatically, and you, the employer, must make contributions to that scheme.

Who needs to be auto enrolled in a workplace pension?

Your staff members will need to be automatically enrolled if they:

      • are not in a qualifying pension scheme already
      • are aged 22 or over
      • are beneath State Pension age
      • earn more than £10,000 per year and work (or usually work) in the UK

If you employ temporary workers or seasonal staff, you must assess them individually when you pay them. This can cause complications, and we can help take the burden away from you by deciding if automatic enrolment is needed for your temporary or seasonal workers.

You can delay putting people into the pension for up to three months for some staff. This is called ‘postponement’. Postponement can be used for all sorts of circumstances, for example, when employing temporary or seasonal staff, who will stop working within three months. Postponement could also be used if new team members are within a probationary period and you want to use the postponement period to ascertain if they will stay.

Other non-eligible individuals can join the program or ‘opt in’ if they want to.

How we’ll handle workplace auto enrolment

Compliance with auto enrolment is critical to avoid legal issues and fines from the Pensions Regulator.

Our expert team will help you meet all of your legal obligations. We can assist you with pension scheme setup, payroll integration, assessing eligibility, calculating contributions, keeping accurate records and completing and submitting your declaration of compliance.

Pension scheme set up and registration

We can assist you with setting up your scheme. We’ll communicate the information we need to help you with pension auto enrolment set up and the records you’ll be required to keep. We will also help and advise you on setting up for auto enrolment contributions and on deductions from your employees.

      Ongoing management

Our payroll and auto enrolment services will ensure that our team is on hand to manage the scheme on an ongoing basis, ensuring employees are included at the right time and the right contributions are made.

      Payroll integration

We offer fully integrated payroll and auto enrolment services, giving you a seamless payroll and pension solution that saves you hours of admin time.

Our payroll software ensures that the right information is sent to the pension provider in the right format. This integration means we can assess when a staff member needs to join the scheme and the deductions to be made. We’ll also deal with joiners and leavers and any postponements you want to make.

Frequently asked questions about auto enrolment

What happens if my business does not comply with auto enrolment regulations?

As an employer, you are required by law to enrol eligible employees into a pension scheme automatically. If you do not meet these legal obligations, you may face enforcement action, including fines or prosecution.

How soon do I have to auto enrol a new employee?

For new employees, your auto enrolment duties start at the same time as their employment contract. Whether you’re required to auto enrol an individual will depend on their age and how much they earn. You may be able to postpone assessing eligibility for up to three months.

Can you help me choose a workplace pension scheme?

We can help you choose a suitable scheme by providing factual information on potential schemes and comparing schemes that may suit your business.
